Let me just detail every step I took so you know where I'm at now.

1) I changed the mySQL password at (can't post the link because I'm 'new') and wrote it down in a file so I wouldn't forget. I copy/pasted it to ensure I was precise.

2) I decided to make a php file just to see if a connection to mySQL would work. I used the snippet of code here: (can't post the link because I'm 'new', just google mysqli_connect and go to first link) to test it out. I made sure the password was in there and that the user was 'root'. I made sure there was a database. I think 'test' is the default, so I used that.

3) The connection failed.

4) In an attempt to fix the problem, I go under 'Users' in myphpadmin to see about the root password. I read online that when you log in with a username where there are duplicates of it, it will choose the one using localhost first. I also read something about the Any user with % host causing an issue. So, I decide to delete all users there with the exception of the root user using localhost just to make it simple because I can't even do a simple connect with my php file and I just want to make sure I eliminate any stupid problems.

6) Still can't connect with my php file.

7) I change the password settings for root to use no password. Still can't connect with my php file.

8) I try to change the password back to something simple - 'abc' - thinking that maybe the @'s and $'s that I used in my password were too much for it to handle. As soon as I press 'Go' to make a password change for root, I get a bunch of errors. I try to refresh phpmyadmin and it flat out won't connect to mySQL at all now. I tried logging into (can't post the link because I'm 'new'. This is supposed to be the link to the AMPSS thing where you first change the pw from 'mysql' to whatever you want) to see if I could change the password there, but that can't even connect to mySQL.

I've tried looking through all the configuration files, but I can't come up with any solution. I'm stuck.

Oh, I made one mistake in my original post. At step 7, when I changed it to use no password, I actually could connect with my php file. That's what led me to believe that my password, which used signs like & and ^ might not be working with php for some reason, hence why I wanted to just try 'abc'.

Decided to do a full reinstall. I won't be changing the settings for root from phpmyadmin and will just use the ampps thing to do it instead.

Got everything working now.
