I have installed Ampps in Windows 7 to be used with WordPress (have not installed WordPress yet).

IIS is 'turned off' and no Skype installed when checking port 80, I see PID 4 (System) is listed as listening on port 80, description is NT Kernel & System.

Can I use a different port in ampps? I am stuck!

Hi,

In Windows Port 80 is used by IIS server or Skype

Try this:

In Run(windows+R) type services.msc and press enter.
Search for World Wide Web Publishing Service or IIS and stop this service.

Follow this guide:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732317%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

Please let me know if you are still facing the same issue.
