Hi all, total newbie but very excited with what i hope Ampps can do for me!

I have it installed, sql and apache running but before i go further i'd like to make sure the next steps i take are the correct ones for the use i need, and would love to get some advise or a link to a step by step guide to do what i need please....

Basically i plan to use back up buddys Deployment feature to bring my current live site across to a local ampps server to develop further off line and once tweaked push it back live online (once again through back up buddys deployment), it basically syncs it allowing really easy push and pull.

I'm a bit lost though...

Should i install wordpress on ampps first?

Set up a domain on ampps first?

if i need to set up a domain in ampps does it need to match the live sites domain / url?

Would i need php too and if so do i need to install that in ampps?

or will the fact i have apache and sql set up mean i should be able to just transfer the live site across and everything will line up?

And if thats the case, do i need to make sure the sql and php numbers match with the ones that are on my hosts live server?

Sorry just not sure of next steps, any help much appreciated!

Thanks
Matt

Hi Mattw,

First setup domain with the same name of your website. Follow this guide:
http://www.ampps.com/wiki/Adding_a_Domain

Next install word press on the domain. Follow this guide:
http://ampps.com/wiki/Install_a_Script

No, all php versions comes with Ampps. Default php 5.5 starts with Apache you can change it from AMPPS panel --> PHP --> Change PHP version option.

>>And if thats the case, do i need to make sure the sql and php numbers match with the ones that are on my hosts live server?

No its not needed.

Hey Rishi

Thanks for getting back and thank you for the answers, i will follow that route now.

Can i just check a few more points please...

I know you said sql and php numbers don't need to match to live server, did you mean just for the live site to the ampps server process?  will this not give me issues when i reverse the process and put the new tweaked dev site back from local server to live, if those update numbers don't match please?

Also, is there something i need to set up on my macbook that the local server will be placed on, to  stop google seeing the ampps server and wordpress installation please?

For example i plan to use backup buddys deployment feature, to push and pull my live site to my ampps offline server, tweak it and push it back to the live server. Surely when i do this push back up to live server, the internet has to be able to link to the ampps server, therefore revealing it to bots and google?

Will that not then risk google indexing it with possible duplicate content issues being created?

this is the feature of back up buddy i plan to use...

https://ithemes.com/backupbuddy/wordpress-staging/

if there is a way to tell ampps to not index, or hide it from google be great to know the process please?

Be great to know any settings i need to make to my mac laptop or ampps server to make sure that the local server is 100% behind a firewall and non indexable by google please?

And do you know if ampps works with back up buddys deployment please? its seems a great way to sync a live site and dev server.

And finally i take it that to update any plugins in wordpress, i will need to do that by downloading each plug ins update? As in, the ampps wordpress installation won't be able to do its normal update route because it won't be connected to the internet right?

Sorry for novice questions!

Thanks
Matt

ok, having a nightmare!

i followed the steps above and used the same domain name .com setting up the domain and then wordpress but now i cannot log ion my wordpress or view my website on my computer. its like Ampps has taken full control and won't let me view those on the live server.

any help please!! I'm desperate!

i have deleted the folder in the Ampps folder that had the identical domain name to my live site, no good.

i deleted the ampps folder to uninstall it, still no joy.

its like the ampps server has taken over my machine for anything linked to my live domain name and then won't let me log in to its live server wordpress panel or view the site.

Please help!!

ok i have it sorted, i had to flush my DNS and point the browser back to the live host using my mac terminal.

So i'm really nervous about reinstalling AMPPS but if i do, can someone please clarify the setting i should be making when setting up a domain...

should it be for example setting the domain as...

http://staging.examplesite.com

rather than my matching my actual domain...

http://example.com

?

And if i do this will this cause issues when pushing the site back up to my live site with urls not matching correctly?

and then what settings should i be using when doing the wordpress install? should it match my live site or different settings?  does it matter?

And should i have my computer connected to the internet when i install this domain and wordpress? allowing ampps?  allowing updates to stuff like sql  etc or plug ins in wordpress?

I'm just very wary of screwing up my connection to live server again and also I'm keen that google cannot index this dev version of my site, esp if the domain name / wordpress install matches exactly.

thanks
Matt

Hi Mattw,

When you create domain in AMPPS, It create domain entry in your hosts file and map local address with entry.

Try this:

When you want to access your live server then open hosts file and put "#" in front of your domain entry.

In Windows, hosts file is located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder and in Linux and Mac OS, hosts file is located in /etc/hosts

The wiki does not explain the difference between Parked and Addon.

What is the difference between the two and why would you use either?
