To be frank, though, I think that if you intend to offer a free and a premium version, you should instead of calling 'free' and 'premium', give them different names. Call the free one 'Softaculous' and give the premium one a different name (and preferable also a lay-out that looks professional but is associated with the premium version instead of free version) since those that know Softaculous, probably know it as a free service. Why? Customers can't be fooled that way if there is a clear difference between the free and the premium version. The hosts that advertise Softaculous as one of their services, advertises the 58 scripts version. The hosts that advertise the premium version, though, says they're offering more then 100 scripts. Instead of just saying 'Softaculous, an auto-installer for your favorite scripts', and leaving the customer to guess whether it is the free or the premium version.

Also, with the current setup, I wonder whether the API for creating your own auto-installers to work with Softaculous will still work in the free version. If so, how would you prevent people from just trying to mimic your installation script and offer them for free on the web, thus removing the difference. Another reason for having a different name + lay-out for the premium version.

Just some food for thought, Alons.

API should be disabled in free version.

I would be intrested too see the list of the free versions scripts?

Is monthly licenses to be added soon? I need this if I get more servers obviously. Thanks.

I really do like your software quite a bit still. I have it installed on my server and have a picture of it for my potential clients on my main site.

Ok, I paid it. How will we know the existing license is converted to an owned lifetime? Also, how many of these owned lifetimes can I buy at that price?
Tnx

You have to add Wordpress to free version. Otherwise people will not even try Softaculous at all.

First let me say that softaculous works great on my servers and I totally agree with a paid model at the pricing levels you are suggesting.

However, there are a couple of issues for VPS providers. If I rent a VPS to Joe for 6 months but I have to pay for 1 year of softaculous I am out 6 months. Charging Joe for 1 year during signup doesn't fit my model as this would be a large increase in the first month for him.

Ideas:
  • License a whole VPS node (perhaps this covers 25, 50, 75, or 100 installations)
  • License a whole provider (again tier levels might need to apply)
  • License a range of IP's (keep in mind that not every ip will be an individual box)
  • Allow floating licenses
  • Charge a per month rate with "points" that are prepurchased in order to stave off credit card transaction fees.

and yes please DO redesign the installer / site / forums (come on default theme?) with the money.

dave, are you suggesting to license the whole VPS machine? And allow all VPS nodes in that machine to use softaculous? If you are a VPS provider (you own the machine) then you can purchase license in bulk. If you are a VPS client I don't think that's possible. The owner of the server/VPS machines are in charged of getting the license for their customers.

They already said somewhere here that they will offer monthly licensing structure so that will solve your problem

The softwares listed there are the 58 scripts right? That are ALSO available to the free Softaculous version, right?

And what are the scripts in the Premium?

BubblecrushWebHost  the scripts on the left are 100 in count and all are available in the Premium Version.

We plan to add another 50 very soon and it will take the count to 150.

Alons

Can you please include Wordpress in the free version? And can you offer monthly license for dedicated servers at $2/month (because you offer it at $24/year)?

We really havent decided on WordPress at the moment 2.0 is in full swing and another 50 scripts are in the making.
The monthly licenses will be available soon BUT you can even take it RIGHT NOW. Please contact sales. The price is $2.5 as Fixed Payment expenses have to be incurred more!

Alons

I hope you get a decision soon about Wordpress being in the free license.

How much for VPS monthly license?

I don't think the best scripts should be in the free version, why would people upgrade?

Think Alons said 2.50$ for VPS monthly, which is very good.
