Is AMPPS a suitable alternative to MAMP Pro? (4 Replies, Read 22868 times)

I've been using MAMP Pro for years for local site development. I've been relatively happy with it, but a recent attempt to update locked me out. I can't retrieve my license key, and support from the developer is abysmal, non-existent even. I simply refuse to give them any more of my money. But I'm not here to complain about MAMP Pro.

I just discovered AMPPS and it looks to be a similar package—but with actual support! Is AMPPS a suitable alternative to MAMP Pro for setting up a local development environment? I have DNS set to route *.dev.[mydomain].com to my local box. From there I need to be able to set up [clientname].dev.[mydomain].com and have it accessible for me to develop on and the client to preview.

Does this make sense? Is AMPSS up to the task of managing this simply and easily via GUI rather than me having to manually configure Apache, etc?

Hi,

You can add domains in AMPPS easily as long as the DNS of the domain point to your computer.
It will configure Apache but AMPPS doesnt have inbuilt NAMED/BIND. So if [clientname].dev.[mydomain].com resolves to your computers address you can add the domain in AMPPS. Just click on "Add Domain" from the home page.

I too upgraded to the latest version of mamp pro, which had several issues which made it unusable. I tried contacting the owner via email and message boards but didn't hear a thing back, it's disgraceful. Plain and simple theft.

Yes, their support is horrible. I was satisfied enough with the FREE version and decided to upgrade to PRO version. Later I found a problem with the PRO version then posted in their forum and also  their support ticket and see what? No response at all. After few months, I repeat again to post and send them email, and no response again.
I thought I'll get something more with PRO version ( at least to anwser my email ) and I was wrong.

Thanks for the pointer to an alternative.  We have several licenses with MAMP Pro, but they have ignored an order problem for us as well.  Simple theft is a good way to describe it!
