I see that my daily automated backups have ceased in mid-March, but i have no idea why.

When I edit installation details in Softaculous, there are no automated backup options

I have shared hosting at Stablehost. I access softaculous through cPanel.

When I contacted them, they said that softaculous is a "third party script" and that they don't know anything about it.

Do I have control over options somewhere? the footer says Powered By Softaculous 4.8.9

Hi,

There is an option in Softaculous Admin panel to disable Automated backups server wide and if this setting is selected none of the users on the server will be able to create automated backups.

Web hosts sometimes disable backups option for endusers if the web host maintains the backups themselves.

It seems your web host might have selected this setting.

Can you please confirm with them that they have not disabled automated backups setting from Softaculous Admin panel ?

ok. they admitted it. kindof a crappy thing for them to do -- it used to be enabled, and they unilaterally disabled it. I was relying on it to be able to recover my wordpress from a bad update, which doesn't happen often but did happen to me yesterday. and i was out of luck.

Recommend avoiding Stablehost unless they allow what i would call incidental backups, and turn this softaculous feature back on.
Which is a shame since they seem pretty good otherwise.

I have just confirmed this with my supervisor and in fact, this option has been disabled from the server side due to our Backup Policy doesn't allow to use the hosting service as Backup Storage.

Actually, i want to soften this statement a little bit; After saying that, I found out they use something called R1Soft by default and it backs up the entire account... the end user can roll back to any of many restore points (it looks like they keep like 30 daily backups plus maybe even older ones monthly or something).
I used the R1Soft tool to do a partial restore, selecting my wordpress folder, and then selecting my wordpress database. It all worked fine -- though it is less convenient than a softaculous restore which is pretty much a one-click operation.
