Hi,

New to hosting and have a 6 month old Wordpress site that I'm trying to move from GoDaddy to Register365.

Have the database backed up and uploaded to Softaculous but not sure what I do next?  Do I install the WP software and upload the database and then move it to register365 or where I'm asked to input details of site where software is stored do I input my actual domain which is still hosted at my old provider.

Confused  :squi:

Thanks, D.

What if I have a different database then?
For example, my old hosting is using ABC_wp123. My new hosting can only use XYZ_wp123. The softaculous cannot restore like the way suggested because it can't access the database.

Hi,

It seems your control panel user name is different on both the hosts. It is not possible at the moment to restore the backup with different database details.

Also your installation might cause issue if it stores the path to your installation which on previous server was /home/ABC/www/ and new server is /home/XYZ/www/

Sorry for my prev post, didn't mention some info:

My backup from softaculous filetype is .tar.gz Would it be a problem? Since I read in the tutorial, it should be .zip

And then I extract the backup, and zip it. Rename accordingly and then upload to the new server.

When I try to backup, I get this error message.

Thanks for you help

Hi,

Please keep the extension as .tar.gz We use .zip extension previously but now we use .tar.gz

Also regarding the restore issue is the cPanel username same on both the servers ? It looks like the cPanel username is not same.

Hi Pismobook,

I think you are doing it the difficult way. Softaculous is amazing, and really easy to make and restore backups of your site(s), but I think it's not meant to migrate your Wordpress from a server to another, with different database names and paths, which requires quite advanced skills.
If you want to do it really really easy, I strongly recommend you to use this Wordpress plugin: http://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/
I've used it a couple of times in the past, and it's a life saver: install it in the original server, make a backup using it's own system, and just copy the installer program it creates on the new server: it will auto-install it in the new server, with different URL nd/or different database, with all your old information.

I hope you find it useful :)

I was able to (mostly) accomplish this with Softaculous 4.6.2. In addition to following the instructions here (http://www.softaculous.com/docs/How_to_Restore_a_Backup_on_a_New_Server), you need to try these steps:
1. On the source server, there is also a folder under .../username/.softaculous called "backups". Find the file in "backups" associated with the .tar.gz file in .../username/softaculous_backups. (You can tell by the date.) It is a small text file.
2. Download that small text file from "backups" and edit it in a text editor.
3. You will see references the control panel name from the source server. Change those to your new control panel name.
4. Copy this updated file to your target server under .../username/.softactulous/backups/
5.  From the softaculous backup/restore, you should see your backup and be able to restore it.
I did this and it worked and I could see the public-facing WP site.

Now, I wasn't able to log in because my target has no SSL yet. So I think I need to change all references from https:// to http:// in the database. I'll try this tomorrow and see how it goes.

Hi,

This guide works if your control panel username is the same.

Since the control panel user is different you will have to make the changes you described.

If the username is the same Softaculous will create the backup info file automatically.

Just an update: I updated my source site to use only http for WP. Then I followed my instructions in my post above, and everything works fine. I was able to see both the public facing WP page and was able to log in - everything looked fine.

One additional note: make sure to update the wp-config.php to reflect the new username.

Hi,

Since the control panel username has changed the prefix for your database name will also change hence you will have to update the username in wp-config.php as well.

In the case where the username is the same you should not face these issues.

Hello,

I actually signed up for an account with this forum because I just wanted to add the final solution to this conundrum.

I tried Mark's steps and at first they worked, but after a half hour my site said "ERROR DATABASE" or something when I tried visiting.

So I thought it was too hard to backup and restore a softaculous in another host with a different username. So I tried the Duplicator plugin, but that's complicated af since it requires FTP and a lot of nonsense that I wasn't ready to deal with. It took me overall five hours, but I actually finally figured out how to migrate a site using a backup. . . and it's easy and free.

I'm not a coder, i'm not a dev, and i'm not a designer. But I have street smarts. And that's what I used to figure this out.

Here's how easy it really is to use a Softaculous backup to migrate your whole WP site to a new host with a different username and domain path:

1. Open the Wp_config.php file
2. Look for the database name here: "define('DB_NAME', 'WHAT'S IN HERE');
3. It should be something like USERNAME_wp123.
4. Change USERNAME to your new host account's USERNAME.
5. Look for the database username here: define('DB_USER', 'WHAT'S IN HERE');
6. Change USERNAME to your new host account's USERNAME.
(Usually the database username and database name are the same. So this should be simple.)
6b. Write down the database name and database username (the modified versions).
7. Find the database password (username password) here: "define('DB_PASSWORD', 'PASSWORD IS HERE');"
8. WRITE DOWN THE PASSWORD
9. Save changes.

10. Go into Softaculous and create the backup. Download the backup. Take note the backup's name
11. Go back to File Manager: /home/USERNAME/.softaculous/backups
12. Find the text file that matches the filename you downloaded. Don't worry, these are all textfiles in this folder. Edit it.
13. Look for all filepaths and change them to your new host's filepath. For ex: /home/olduser/yoursite.com TO: /home/NEWUSER/yoursite.com
(I only ever find 2 that need changing)
14. Look for all database name and database usernames and change them to the new ones you've made in steps 1 - 9. (I only find 2 here too).
15. DOUBLE CHECK: ""softdbpass";s:10:"PASSWORD"" MAKE SURE PASSWORD IS THE SAME AS THE PASSWORD YOU WROTE DOWN. (There's no way they'd be different, but make sure.)
16. Save Changes.
17. Download the edited file.

18. GO TO YOUR NEW HOST'S FILE MANAGER
19. Go to /home/username/.softaculous/backups
20. Upload the edited file in step 17
21. Go to /home/username/softaculous_backups
22. Upload the backup in Step 10.

23. Go to CPanel Home, Under Databases category, Click on "MYSQL DATABASES"
24. Create New Database: Use same name as Step 4.
25. (Scroll down) Create New Database User: Use same name as Step 6.
26. FOR THE DATABASE USER PASSWORD: Use the PASSWORD U JOTTED DOWN
27. Add User to Database (Add the user u just created to the new database u just created)
28. Give the new user full privileges!

29. Restore the backup and you're all set :)

Hi,

Thank you for sharing the useful information.

This post was last updated in 2015 and we have added many features in Softaculous since then. One of them is Remote Import using which you can import any installation from any server to your new server.
Here is the guide for the same :
