Ampps is turning into a pain in the rear to use. In January, when Ampps prompted that there was an update I was, for the first time, able use the automated update. But to my dismay phpmyadmin started throwing errors when I looked at any tables structure. I tried several things to fix it, including updating PHP, but with no success. So I just dealt with it. Then the update came down in February and guess what the automated update no longer worked. I decided I was to busy to mess with the stupid thing and kept using the crippled version I had.

While working with some other things I realized yesterday that Ampps was at version 3, great a new major version. So I decided to backup my entire database and my website files and do a clean install of Ampps. That was major mistake as now Apache does not start and I get 5 different errors about php. I have wiped the Ampps install from my PC 3 times (uninstall and then remove stray files) an no success. I restarted my PC after the last 2 wipes and tried redownloading Ampps on the last attempt.

I guess when the Ampps startup dialog started showing up half off the right side of the screen, I should have known this day was coming.

PS. Off Topic: Why on earth is the "textarea" (and iframe) for a new post 530px by 175px it should be at least 800px by 300px and it should be resizable. I would think softaculous would be very aware of website trends.

First, it is a standard practice by software developers to post download links to old versions of software, as a "stable version" is not always so stable (as Ampps has so aptly demonstrated). Fortunately with a bit of deduction I was able to figure out what the links were for previous versions

http://files.ampps.com/Ampps-2.7-setup.exe
http://files.ampps.com/Ampps-2.8-setup.exe

I reverted back to 2.8 and then tried the automated update, which, surprisingly worked, and updated me to 3.0, but Apache still didn't start (however the php errors were gone). I then tried all the solutions at http://www.softaculous.com/board/index.php?tid=7104 but none of them worked.

I also tried http://files.ampps.com/Ampps-5.6.6RC1-setup.exe and it had the same issue.

I have reverted back to 2.8 and everything works fine (even the table structure bug is gone). But I should note that after restoring my database and my website files the automated update no longer works. And,  as an experienced programmer, why that is makes my head spin.

As I didn't include it in my original post, I am using windows 7 professional.

PS. an additional note on my previous comment about the size of the textarea/iframe. Softaculous must have some very bad programmers. I resized the textarea and iframe, using Firebug, and is crashed Firefox. Apparently your javascript is crap as well.

Works with version 2.8 though.
