Hi

This is my very first time i ventured in to vps's and webuzo.

I can receive emails but NOT send any. All/most google searches about this points to an email client authentication error. My email client however is working fine with other emails. My problem seems to be with:
Invalid HELO name on my vps. How do i change the HELO name on a centos server? Can somebody please help (in simple english)

thanks

Kevin

Hi KevinC,
thank you for your post / question.

I want suggest to you to be more detailed when you post a support request, also if your time can be not much or you don't want miss too time in the request.

Quote
I can receive emails but NOT send any.

1. You don't have specified from where you are trying to send email. Web, Email Client, etc
2. You don't have specified what is the error showed or what happen when you try to send

you only suppose the HELO name is not correct.

I also want to suggest to Webuzo Team to create a specific guide for help users to setup email correctly as I can see frequently this issue.

So KevinC,
for be able to send email you should have correct DNS including
SPF record.
You can find SPF guide by Google it and discover what is and how to do. You can also look for SPF tutorial.

Maybe is good to set DKIM and DMARC

Anyway you can do this test. Try to open this website:
https://www.mail-tester.com/

Copy the email showed in the page and keep this page opened, than try to send an email with a casual object and some casual text.

Once send follow the test on the page, use the button to check your score. The page will show all issue you need to fix with your inbox.
If you want you will be able to share your results link in private with me. I don't suggest to share in public as your email address will be visible to everyone.

You have to do google search and fix all your issue.

Thanks peopleinside

i did that. Results with problems are

* FSL_HELO_NON_FQDN_1 (what i want to change)
* We didn't find a server (A Record) behind your hostname xxxxx
* Your reverse DNS does not match with your sending domain.

Apologies for the slim details.

1 I am using thunderbird, it connects succesfully to my server and can download emails, but can't send any
2 Same problem if i try to send email from server (squirrel)

I agree on a more detailed manual for email setup. For instannce. I have setup exim and dovecot via webuzo, but does it needs to configured somewhere AFTER INSTALL?

Hi,
Your Domain Name are registered on your web hosting or in a different website?
You have DNS settings in Webuzo but this settings is ignored if you have the domain in other hosting and you are using different name server.

Only you know where DNS of your domain are managed. If there are not managed by Webuzo you need to go in your DNS panel and configure manually the correct records for your email.

For manage a VPS if your DNS is not managed by Webuzo so your domain is outside of the VPS company you need know how to use and set DNS. You can Google and search for tutorials.
I cannot set your VPS for you.

1. I don't know well this error but you can do a Google search for know better, however I suggest to correct that only after fix other problem.
2. your DNS seems to be not correct, this is why you have issue.
3. The reverse DNS must be set by your hosting provider where you have VPS, before ask them to fix this you need learn how to use DNS , have a correct SPF for email, than when this issue are resolved you can consider to fix also RDNS

Thanks for the effort sir.

My summary.

I have my domain at a seperate register/provider than my VPS.
I have dns management in webuzo, my vps control panel and with my domain provider.

Just to be sure. All DNS management needs to done at my domain provider?

I have managed to point the domain to my server and its working. I have also managed to set a rdns at my vps control panel, that seems to be working too (according to pingability)

The invalid HELO error is shown in the failed emails.
550 Access denied - Invalid HELO name (See RFC2821 4.1.1.1)

I am trying to solving the problems on a one by one basis

Hi,
the invalid HELO name can be a wrong configuration into your Thunderbird.

https://bobcares.com/blog/how-to-resolve-550-access-denied-invalid-helo-name-error-from-outlook-0x800ccc78-windows-mail-etc-in-cpanel-whm-exim-mail-servers/

Also if this guide is for Outlook http://www.techieshelp.com/the-server-responded-550-access-denied-microsoft-outlook/ you can read

Quote
Once you are there. Select the Outgoing Mail tab. Put a tick in the option for “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”. Also use the same settings as you would for receiving email

NO, It's not. As i said, my thunderbird DO CONNECT to my server FINE. I can receive email. I also get the same error when sending email straight from my server, already tested that to rule out thunderbird.

Helocheck@abuseat.org also reports an "INVALID HELO SYNTAX" It seems that i need to change the HELO somewhere.

Can you answer me this,please.

If one install EXIM and DOVECOT via WEBUZO, is there any configuration somewhere i still need to do?

In the last 4 days, my mail server cant send mail to some domains. I receive these errors:

(abc (at) aygaz.com.tr), Result: failed, Status: 5.5.1 501 Syntax error in command parameter(s) Domain name expected

(abc (at) total.com.tr), Result: failed, Status: 5.5.1 501 Syntax: HELO hostname

(abc (at) telemaks.com.tr), Result: failed, Status: 5.5.1 501 Syntactically invalid HELO argument(s)

(abc (at) ziraatbank.com.tr), Result: failed, Status: 5.5.1 501 Syntax error in parameters or arguments

(abc (at) normsan.com), Result: failed, Status: 5.5.1 501 5.5.1 HELO/EHLO requires domain address

I looked the log files for last 2 years, but find this problem only
last 4 days. I searched the error code, but cant solve the problem.
Error code descriptions tell same things. "Your email adress, domain
invalid, character problem etc."

There is Kerio Mail Server 6.7 on Windows Server 2003.

I tried to send from different IP adresses, domains, web mail/outlook
and disabled antivirus program on the server but problem can't solved.
Mail server ip adresses aren't blocked by blacklists.

What is the reason of this problem, and how can I solve it?

Thanks.

Typically, after connecting to an SMTP server, the first line of the request is simply:

HELO

It looks as if the SMTP server you're connecting to now expects the hostname as an argument:

HELO example.com

Make the change and retry.

Hi,
sorry for the delay but I AM not paid for give support.

I AM just a Member of Webuzo, I AM not working and I spent my time for give free support to the users online also in other software (Open Source).

I cannot give a deep support but only basic ... first because sometimes I don't know all, and when I know there is too much work to do this for free.
Also me ... just worked a lot alone when I start to learn to use VPS and solve Webuzo Issues.

Maybe I think user should find free help on the Internet so as... sometimes I AM able to find some free support or software than after I do the same for other.

If you are sure you are using authentication in SMTP with Thunderbird and username used for SMTP is not what is before the @ but your full email address and you continue to have the same error, you are connecting using STARTTLS or SSL and is giving the same error maybe you can have an hostname issue and you need correct that. The HELO name.

Be careful, from now all I can suggest to do via SSH can be dangerous for your VPS. You need know a bit of SSH or stay very careful on what you do. Wrong command or if some my instruction can be wrong, your server can be KO and all data loosed.

If you are a paid member of Webuzo I suggest to open a support ticket but if you are free user than Webuzo should not really manage this kind of issue as is expected you know how to manage a VPS.

You need activate SSH from webuzo than Login into your SSH by using the software: https://www.bitvise.com/ssh-client-download for example.
You need put your server IP as hostname, your root username maybe "root" and your SSH password.

I can help you only on CentOs.
Once you are loged in do the command SSH:
PHP Code

 cd

and press enter
now command:
PHP Code

 hostname

and press enter
this should show your hostname.

In my case I set my hostname as my domain --> mydomain.ext
For set the hostname you have some process to do.
Maybe you need follow a Tutorial on the Internet:

Example: https://www.vultr.com/docs/how-to-change-your-hostname-on-centos by skip step 6 as the reverse DNS is managed by your hosting.

Consider all is at your risk.
