Hi,
Is it safe to update a Joomla 1.7.1 version originally installed by Softaculous to new Joomla 2.5.3?

I have taken a backup using Softaculous in the meantime.
BTW, does this backup get auto removed after restore?

Many thanks,

- Vince

No the Backup doesn't get deleted after restore. In case if you want to restore your backup again in future we don't delete it. If you want to delete, you can delete from  http://localhost/ampps/index.php?act=backups

Great, I shall be trying this week.

Can the backup be used to create a 'development' version in a SUB-Domain of the same cPanel account/domain?

Hi,

No. Since the url path, database details will be different in cPanel.

Oh, surprised at your response.
Thought it would be a process similar to the following request:

Hi,

The above documentation explains to restore a backup from one server to another.
Here the URL, Path, and domain name remains same.
For eg: From one cPanel server to other the URLs, paths and  domain name do not change usually and even the permissions remain the same.
And if you restore a backup from localhost to a server then you might face permission issues, the URL will change due to localhost and the paths will also change.
Hence you might have to change them manually.

Hi,

For using the working copy of Joomla from the server to localhost you can follow following steps:
1. Export the database from your server and import it in your local MySQL server and copy the files and paste it in the /PATH/TO/AMPPS/www/ folder
2. Change the URLs and paths of your server in the database.
3. Change the database settings in the configuration.php according to your database and make other required changes in the same file.
4. Then you can Import it to AMPPS using the following guide:
http://ampps.com/wiki/How_to_Import_an_Installation
5. Now you can make changes and then while uploading you can upload all the files except the configuration.php and import the new database with the changes made for the URLs and paths.

Hi,
Thanks for reply so far.

What if we use a different domain name on the same server, would that make it simpler?

Hope so

Hi,

If you want to use a different domain name then you will have to change all the instances of the previous domain name in your database.
