Topic : Windows 8.1 - You dont have permissions to edit hosts

Posted By: Zagroda on February 18, 2014, 12:09 pm
Hello,

I have problem with adding domains to my list under Windows 8.1. Error is " Access Denied: You don't have permissions to edit hosts file. Entry wont be added to host file.".
I will add, that my UAC settings are off. Did some one had the same problem and did  resolve him?

Hi,

You need to first open your file editor(For eg: Notepad) as Admin(Right click on the editor and then select "Run as Administrator"). Now open the hosts file, you should now be able to edit it successfully.

Please let us know if you still facing the problem.

This solution did work. But Ampps still don't have access to hosts file.

Hi,

After disabling UAC, check the checkbox anyway(skipping the warning) and try adding the domain. Let us know if it works. We will fix it in future releases if it has any bug.

It is not working.

What is working with me, and I don't have to edit hosts file manually is:
- Run Ampps as Administrator
- when creating domain I use domains that browser will open (exmaple: mydomain.local - not working, mydomain.local.com - working)
- when creating domain I check the checkbox even when warning is there

Also if I run Ampps as Administrator, UAC can be turn on!

If you need more help, you can count on me ;)

Hi,

You were able to find a workaround for this, right ?

We will try to regenerate this issue and fix the issue if any.

I think it is some kind of workaround. Run Ampps as Administrator and ignore red text ;)

I will wait for real fix ;)

I am a long-time user and for as long as I can remember this has been an issue with almost every new Windows install.  And here we are, three years later, and this still has not been fixed!
