In the Softaculous panel, it would not let me update my phpMyAdmin from 4.8.0.1 to anything higher because the requirement was for PHP 5.6. However, according to their site, 4.8.3 is compatible with PHP 5.5.
As a workaround, I manually installed. 4.8.3 and Softaculous recognized the version mismatch and it updated the install version information. I have a feeling that when 4.8.3+ comes out, I will run into the same issue.

Hi,
We have set requirement to 7.1 because it's mentioned in their documentation to use minimum PHP 7.1 for phpMyadmin.
https://docs.phpmyadmin.net/en/latest/require.html#php
To use 4.8.3+ version you need to update PHP to 7.1

Hi,
Thanks for notifying. We have updated minimum PHP requirement to 5.5. Now users will be able to install/upgrade phpMyAdmin on PHP 5.5 and above.
