We are trying to create a staging site and it keeps telling us the following "You cannot create staging in a subdirectory of the original installation"

This use to work and for some reason we cant do this .

Main site is installed on root folder so no matter how we do this the staging will always end a sub folder .

If we create a sub domain or use install in a folder it will always a be a subdirectory.

Is there something we can do to fix this or are we doing something wrong?

Okay this is all fine if , we would need to move all the files around to get the install in a sub directory.

But if we load a new WP install and set the site to be installed on a sub dir then we need to go and edit the site URL again to get it to on the root .

Example

Install example.com/WP_DIR
and to use the URL example.com on the above folder we will need to edit the install again to get it done.

Is there no way of having the site be installed on sub folder have the URL as the top level domain  without editing . As for us to just be able to get the site we working to a staging we need to move all the files to a sub directory.
