I am beginning to work on a partially completed website that uses PHP.  I haven't worked on a website in years.  I am new to PHP and started working on a tutorial.    I want to develop locally, so I installed AMPPS on my Win7 laptop.  The tutorial said to create a simple PHP file in the web server's root directory. I don't know where to put this file.  The places I have tried have not worked.  So I think there must be some settings that need to be made and I have no clue.  I have tried to put my PHP file in:c:\Program Files(x86)\Ampps\Apache\hello.phpc:\Program Files(x86)\Ampps\Apache\htdocs\hello.php  I have also tried http://localhost/hello.php  and http://127.0.0.1/hello.php and I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"  When I try http://localhost/ I get a Ampps page with the folder cgi-bin under Name and yesterday's date under Last Modified.  Can someone help me get Apache and/or PHP setup properly? Thanks!

Hi,

Put hello.php file under c:\Program Files(x86)\Ampps\www then try accessing http://localhost/hello.php

[/quote] Thanks for your reply.  I get a HTTP 404 not found error puting it in the www folder. When I type http://localhost/ only, I get the Ampps icon with the HTTP 404. Any ideas?

Hi,
Is apache started ?
and also check the file permissions of the "www" folder and also the files inside www folder. It should have full permissions.

If after this also it doesn't works than create a ticket.

Ketan,

Thanks for your reply.  I checked permissions and both have full permissions.  The trouble seems to be Apache is not started.  When I open the Ampps Control Center, Apache is not started and My SQL is started.  I click to start Apache and it doesn't start.  The little window below says Apache started, but the Stop or Restart buttons do not become clickable.  The Start button stays clickable.

So how do I start Apache?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Are you using any application that uses port 80(for eg: Skype) ? because if port 80 is busy than apache won't start as it uses port 80.

Do one more thing, restore apache's default configuration settings(Goto AMPPS Control Center->Apache tab->Restore Default Configuration), and after this step check for httpd.conf in /path/to/Ampps/apache/conf/.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Ampps.  So now Apache is running and my PHP pages are working.

I checked Skype and port 80 and 443 are alternative ports to 56077.

Thanks for your help!
