I have a desktop and laptop Mac. I want to have a common workspace for AMPPS on both. Dropbox is too full. Google Drive is BIGGER. Can I use Google Drive just like I would Dropbox?

Do you have a better solutions? Should I put it somewhere else?
I'm new to this kind of development.

Hi,

I haven't worked with Dropbox or Google Drive. But I think it should work in the same way.

Also if you are installing whole Ampps in Dropbox folder then please avoid that. You can simply share your web root directory (www)

Thanks. But I'm not sure what you mean by share your web root directory. Isn't that created by the CMS in the AMPPS environment? Doesn't that environment have to be active and accessible? If I create a Drupal installation for instance, on one computer, and then want to work on another computer. The first computer would need to be running also. I'm not understanding how only the root www could be functional.

Hi,

Since you are using Google Drive/Dropbox. I am assuming you have two machine and both machine have Ampps, right ?

Web Root Directory is the directory accessible from the Browser (Apache DocumentRoot). Now it is not necessary that it has to be Ampps/www, by creating virtual host you can set any directory as DocumentRoot. VirtualHosts are created by Ampps(we call it domains), you can specify the directory while creating domains. So specify the directory which is created in the Google Drive folder. I haven't tried this yet, but it should work. Create a domain from your other machine's Ampps with the directory in the Google Drive(which just got shared).

If you want to use /Applications/Ampps/www you can move whole www folder to Google Drive and create a symlink of google drive www to /Applications/AMPPS/www

Steps:
1. Create a Domain http://example.com with a path in the Google Drive. Add the entry in hosts file.(Ignore the red warning if any and check it anyway)
2. Put a test php file. And access the domain from your browser.
3. Confirm now that the directory in google drive is repliacted on your other machine.
4. Create a Domain in other Ampps with the same domain name or any other domain name but with the path of that directory which just got generated. (Same as 1st step)
5. Check if you can access the same test file from the browser.
6. You can install WordPress on the domains created by Ampps. You should get an option to select the domain in the install page of any script. So the CMS or any script installed will be shared between two machines.

In case of www, just creating the symlink should work, install scripts normally, it should be shared.

I've been using a shared Ampps installation for a while now (conf, private, tmp, var and www folder symlinked plus the relevant config files) and i can say it has been working quite good either on dropbox and now with bittorrent sync. I've been only experiencing some trouble latley with large ibdata1 file relative to the database that (i suppose) didn't sync correctly and damaged some database metadata but i've been able to use it correctly on both environments for a long time. database is where you can have some trouble but it works like a charm if you want to share only the www directory.
Of course i share this conf between two mac computers with same os version and same ampps version.. i wouldn't dare to do it between mac and win!
Just my 2 cents!

In reading the posts so far, I am just starting to grasp how AMPPS may work. Correct me if I'm wrong. The AMPPS system does the work, the processing, the computing, and it can be located locally on any machine you are working from, wherever it is installed, but the database files, the CMS files, and any other php apps or other programs, can be located in any location, which the AMPPS system can access and run.

It may also be possible to locate the AMPPS system in the cloud as well. I still don't really understand how internet services work. My previous understanding was that the "LAMP" system and the Internet files, such as the CMS of choice such as Drupal or Wordpress needed to be located in the same location. Also, I thought that all the PHP apps needed to be where the "LAMP" installation was located. That seems not to necessarily be true.

Can someone recommend a book to read that explains how "LAMP" systems work, how apps interact with it, and how I can "master" internet technology?
