Topic : Security Updates for Wordpress Website

I have recently taken over running a wordpress website. I have zero experience in website security. I am doing this on a voluntary basis for a charoty. I was told that I have to update plugins regularly and critical vulnerabilities should be updated immediately. Please can someone give me a guide to how to do this.
