We recently had a client open a ticket claiming that we had been hacked and that people ad defaced our server with links to child pornography. After getting more details we found that the links were on the demo of the VX Guestbook at http://www.softaculous.com/demos/VX_Guestbook

As admin details were posted I was able to login and remove these posts clearing up the issue with this particular client however it opened up our minds to whether or not we should link to these open demos where spam can run rampant and to all subjects. I feel that we as the admin users of softaculous should have the ability to disable access to these demos through the whm admin screen and also that the login details to these demos be protected in some way. Maybe that dreaded captcha should be added or require a forum account to gain access. Something that would prevent this again in the future.

Hi,

We have cleared that demo.
Each demo refreshes after an hour.
If we find an issue again with guestbooks we will set the refresh rate higher to 30 minutes

Well guys,  i would like to suggest that the demos do NOT refresh as you say they do.

If you visit that same link that the OP posted, you will see it is full of child porn commenst once again.  The first post being made at 9.33  and the last post being at 10.16

Im sure that you will agree that this is a longer period than 30 minutes.

This is NOT good guys and needs sorting with immediate attention.

ok,  just spotted my error with teh refresh times.  This still isnt good though and needs addressing asap.

I would like to mae the same suggestion as the OP.  How about some kind of captcha before being able to reach the demo server,  or similar.

This reflects really bady on those that use softaculous.

Thank you for chiming in on this one. I saw alons did address the issue but did not issue a full fix on this one. With the install base that softaculous must have by now I can only imagine that these links of child porn have the potential of reaching hundreds of companies and countless more users. Open script installs are dangerous and unless something is done to deter robots and other automated systems this will continue and companies might have to resort back to fantasti-crap, sorry fantastico.

We may have low post counts alons but we do have a legitimate issue here that needs decisive action and quickly.

Yet again guy, if you visit that link as mention by teh OP.  You will see contented related to Child Porn.

Also,  2 clients have also contacted me asking about this and have asked us to stop using softaculous as such content is appearing on your demo server.

The comment here also plasted at 6am.  It is now 18.35.  What happened to the server refreshing??

You NEED to prevent this from hapenning again. 

Please either pull down the demo for this partular script or apply a CAPTCHA. 
OR provide a way for us to turn off the demo links.

I wont risk my business in this way guys and would rather stop using softaculous then to have clients see such content.

Please alons. You can see that customers of your clients are complaining. When a client of ours has an issue with a third party we do look to see that we get in contact with that third party to get the issue resolved. We are a professional company and even if we state it is a third party that is failing to properly filter the content that is being served through our control panel it is still on our control panel. We love the service we just want a little more control and if you are unable to provide proper safeguards on your content then we would stress the need for an option for us to turn it off on our end.

Hi,

The server refresh rate is now set to 10 Minutes for this particular script.
If you want we will take down that demo.
We have been monitoring it for the past 7 days, if it still happens we are going to disable that demo for sometime.
Infact, this demo had been disabled for a DAY.

Thsi particular script has the ability for admin to turn on CAPTCHA via teh conifguration feature within the admin panel.

Can this not be set to be turned on each time the server refreshes itself?  Or havin the script setup for admin to review all posts bfore they are made public?
