I recently imported a VPS from a RAW image created by a customer who had not installed any drivers prior to taking their disk image. As this was a Windows VM, neither the SCSI or VirtIO disk driver options would allow the VPS to boot once imported.
Once I had manually edited the xml config file for the VPS to use the SATA bus for the disk, I was able to boot the VPS and install the necessary drivers to use the VirtIO bus for the disk.
I believe that an option to use the SATA disk interface would be greatly beneficial and save those less knowledgable about kvm from digging into config files they shouldn't really be touching.
