I am using ubuntu 14.04 and have installed ampps. I am facing some problems.

1. "Add Domain" does not enter anything to "Host File"
2. I cannot add anything inside the folder "www"

Regarding problem 2, i know it has something to do with ubuntu file system but i cannot get it resolved by searching the web. Please help me out!

Hi,

>>1. "Add Domain" does not enter anything to "Host File"

Open terminal and run following command.

sudo chmod 777 /etc/hosts

>>2. I cannot add anything inside the folder "www"

What file permission and ownership is set to Ampps folder ?

run following command and let us know the output.

ls -l /usr/local/ampps/

Also in Ubuntu OS, run Ampps with sudo

Hello there!

Thanks for the response.I have solved the second problem. But the first problem still persists. Running sudo chmod 777 /etc/hosts didn't solve it. I always run ampps with sudo. Is there any other way around?

with regards.

If it's owned by root then run following command to change ownership.

sudo chown <your username>:<your usergroup> -R /etc/hosts

Hello everyone. I am facing exactly the same issue with a fresh install of Ubuntu 16 (all flavors), Cent OS, Fedora, Linux Mint. Out of the box with no additions other than just updating to latest OS and installing Ampps 3.6.

So far I have tried a suggestion from the support to change the write permission to 777 (which I do not consider safe unless it is a testing web machine only) but that did not resolve the issue.

I've decided to downgrade a bit as I do not see many people having the same issue so I tested 3.5 version and it installed correctly but had the same issue - nothing is added to /etc/hosts. I chowned the file to ampps:ampps as far as the Ampps is having that ownership but again had no better luck.

Right now I am going to test Linux Mint 32 bit just to be sure that I have tested everything I can. My PC is Intel Core Duo 5000 series with 4GB of ram so I would stick with Mate 32/64 if I can make it work. Having installed Windows makes it work like a charm but i am really struggling to find what is happening with the app under Linux.

Any ideas are highly appreciated as it's been a while since I started dealing with Linux and I really want to stick to it but need a safe LAMP to be working. Call it me being lazy to go with a server setup manually, but I prefer to have the portability of Ampps and have it with me wherever I travel etc.

And again, the point is not to have alternatives to the app, but to make it work and make it better for everyone's needs. Thanks in advance to the support and everyone assisting in the recovery.

Run “wget http://s4.softaculous.com/a/ampps/files/Ampps-3.8-x86_64.run” to download and launch the AMPPS installer package directly from the Softaculous host. This may take a few minutes depending on your network speed.

I personally use my own Windows Server DNS Services for this. I just have too many machines to deal with HOSTS files. and I like on Linux, I think that you can easily change which ORDER of dns resolution you are currently using. I wish that I could do that on Windows. Just temporarily put the DNS server to have a higher priority than HOSTS file. it would help in troubleshooting. For licensing, I just use Windows Server trial versions. I used to have MSDN, and if I was working fulltime, I'd just get MSDN again. it's worth it. I just can't ever get DNS server on linux working properly. I guess the primary DNS problems that I've had on Linux revolve around a 'control panel' program called VestaCP. I was a slave to VestaCP for many years and now, I'm ecstatic that there is a good fork called HestiaCP.  VestaCP includes softaculous, but HestiaCP doesn't. HestiaCP seems a lot better for production websites, it supports multi factor authentication everywhere, and HTTPS/SSL is a lot more reliable/full-featured with HestiaCP.

I ran into the same problem with a fresh install of Ubuntu 16. I tried all the answers you wrote and all early could not solve all the problems and go through with everything.
