Mac Applications folder permissions, editing files in Applications folder (5 Replies, Read 11031 times)

Hi there

this isn't so much of an AMPPS problem - the software is fantastic, and addresses almost all the problems and issues I've had previously with MAMP, XAMPP, Bitnami, etc.

It's more about the environment it's installed in - I placed the AMPPS folder in /Applications on my Mac, as the install process recommends. However, because /Applications is owned by the system not my user, whenever I make a change it asks for my admin password. Additionally, when I access files across the network I get errors saying I can't save changes.

I understand all of this is probably intended in order to maintain security and because AMPPS is basically a local development solution. I'm just wondering if there's a simple workaround - like moving the AMPPS folder to another location, or changing permissions.

Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated, and thanks for such a great piece of software.  :)

Hi,

Sorry it not possible to change the location. You can change the permission though. We have not tried changing it yet.

I think you are trying to make web directory shared. right ? You can use alias or create a domain for the path which is shared.

BTW /Applications/AMPPS folder's user will be the user who installed it.

I have exactly the same problem and I cannot resolve it. every time I want to run or stop  Ampps it asked for my permission. surely there must be a way of overcoming this?

I have also read in another post that you can run Ampps in your Dropbox is this correct and can you access with both Mac or Windows?

regards

Hi alcluith

You cannot run AMPPS in any other folder than /Applications, I did try, and forum staff confirmed.

I did find another solution which actually works pretty well. inside AMPPS, it's the folder named 'www' where your site files and folders are stored. I simply moved that folder to another location and created a symbolic link to it where the original was.

For example, I placed the 'www' folder in my Documents folder, then in Terminal I cd to the AMPPS folder, then created a symbolic link by typing this:

Code

cd /Applications/AMPPS
ln -s /Users/MyUserName/Documents/www www

You can place the 'www' folder anywhere - my Documents folder made it easy enough to fix up permissions. In theory you could store it on a USB drive too, I guess.

Hope this helps.

That works great for me.
saves a lot time going back and forward through application to get to my filess

maybe something to consider in next issue of Ampps, otherwise a great app.
